This gag photo postcard was photographed at Lake Hopatcong by local photographer William J. Harris at beginning of the 20th century.
One of the trademarks of W.J. Harris were his humor and novelty postcards. Vacation time at Lake Hopatcong encouraged people to loosen up a little and laugh, and humorous scenes were in high demand to send back to friends in the cities.
Summer lake visitors could go to the studio of W.J. Harris on Lake Hopatcong and have their photo taken in a powered bi-plane which was suspended in Harris' studio. Their 'flight' photo negative would be sandwiched with an aerial photo negative of Lake Hopatcong, and the two printed together into a personalized postcard. This was only a few years after the first powered flight by the Wright Brothers, so with air flight so new these personalized postcards probably fooled a few folks back home.
